You should totally keep it going for a few days, I bet you hit 1,000 (much more impressive) within a day! Give it 3 days and take it to him along with a detailed plan about how you plan to care for the dog, and the breed you're after, outlining why that breed would fit into your family. I'll bet you with that kind of preparation he'll have a very hard time saying no! Also, if he still says no... I think phase 2 of your operation should be sending postcards or letters to your dad telling him that the community thinks you need a dog. I'll send at least 5. :) Good luck, I really hope you get your pup. I have an emotional therapy dog, and she has done WONDERS for me. I saw your note about getting a shelter dog, that's great! I would really recommend getting a puppy, and if you have questions as to what dog breed might be best, give me an email! I am a producer for a dog-related show on Animal Planet and I know a LOT about dog breeds and fitting the right animals into the right homes. If you haven't made up your mind yet, and you'd like to, feel free to email me telling me the kind of dog you're looking for... How much do you want to walk the dog? Do you want a dog that is very clingy/loyal or more independent? Do you live in a house or condo? Those and any more questions you have I can help answer for you, again if you're still on the fence. I really hope this happens for you - my dogs are one of the BEST parts of my entire life, and I couldn't live without them! Email me any time, even after you get the dog, and if you have questions about anything (separation anxiety, which can be really big in some breeds; best types of foods; excessive barking, etc.) :) PS - My comment about recommending you get a puppy isn't for everyone, it's just because you mentioned you have some social anxieties and there's some great reasons to get a puppy, which I'd be glad to share with you, to help with depression/anxiety. That's all from me. Best of luck! :D PPS - My se

Dogs can go into public with you, and with a note from your doctor, they can go ANYWHERE with you, which is a big reason to get a dog over a cat. Also cats can be very independent (not all, but most from my experience having owned both my entire life and having worked with animals daily for my job). Some dog breeds are not great for depression/anxiety, but some are PERFECT... Having one for such things myself, I can personally attest (and again I've filmed episodes of my show about dogs adopted for just those reasons, so there's some very good reasons to get a dog over a cat for this type of stuff). That said, some cats are AMAZING for the same problems. I guess it mostly depends on what you're looking for out of the relationship with your fuzzy friend and what kind of benefits you want. I'd argue that any animal can be helpful with most types of depression... Dogs are just a little more zany and fun at times which can be uplifting. But like I said, it's all about your personal preference. I wouldn't say that one type of animal is BETTER than any other kind for these things, if we're talking about common pets that enjoy human companionship. Some are just preferable depending on your personality, living situation and emotional needs.
