I'd be careful taking a dog from a dog shelter for your first ever dog. We did that twice and, being lacking in real doggy experience both times, ended up having to return them - and they were the ones with the least problems. Getting a dog from a puppy helps them bond with you and makes them a lot less difficult to handle, but if you think you've got the patience and knowhow, go ahead and get one from a shelter. Bringing up any dog is equally rewarding! :D
