Myth: SOPA is a censorship bill. Fact: SOPA has nothing to do with censorship, unless you feel that prosecuting theives and facilitators/enablers of thieves is censorship. Myth: SOPA violates due process of law. Fact: SOPA has due process of law built in to its text so as to ensure due process of law, in fact it requires it. Myth: SOPA will ruin the internet. Fact: SOPA will ruin the day for people who illegally exploit the internet. If you use the internet to be a pirate, yes SOPA will probably ruin the internet for you. Myth: SOPA is anti-economy. Fact: SOPA is pro-economy. Myth: SOPA is vague. Fact: SOPA isn't that vague. Read it and then read the alternative that google is promoting and tell me which one is vague. The google supported alternative is much, much more vague than SOPA. Myth: SOPA will ruin youtube, google, facebook, twitter, craigslist and other big companies. Fact: SOPA will not ruin them. If they take action to prohibit facilitation of piracy then they have nothing to fear. SOPA has due process built in. It requires notice be sent to the company in suspicion of failure to comply. The company has the opportunity to comply. The company gets busted if they fail to comply. In other words, if they make, sell, promote, or let others make/sell/promote piracy on their website they can get busted. If they support, through official commerce channels, companies that make/sell/promote piracy, then they can get busted. But nowhere does SOPA allow these companies to get busted unless they are directly involved in piracy, or enabling/faciliatating pirates. Myth: SOPA is clean because it has all the letters of soap. Fact: SOAP is not spelled the same as SOPA and doesn't mean the same thing. In fact, SOPA is an accronym. SOPA means "Stop Online Piracy Act". SOPA is the House's version, PIPA is the Senate's version, but they both ultimately strive to target piracy. Myth: It is legal to copy your iTunes library to a CD and give that CD as a gift to your friend. FACT: Those who do this are literally thieves, under the law. You can only makes copies of your content for your own private purposes...and their is a limited number of copies you are legally allowed to make and you may only make them for those IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD. When you buy a song you do not buy ownership of the rights for the music. You are buying a LICENSE TO USE the song in a pre-established way. A purchase of copyrighted music, or movie, is a contract and copying/distributing/pirating said music, or movie, is a breach of contract and is punishable under the law. Their are a variety of ways to pirate digital content. SOPA's purpose is to target pirates of this digital content. Myth: I trust the government. Fact: I am suprised beyond belief that the government wrote a bill as good as SOPA and I am equally blown away that so many people are against SOPA. I am deeply confused and concerned. SOPA is a perfect example of the type of bill that our legislature is charged to write, and that our executive powers are charged to enforce. It is a law that targets violators of individual freedom and liars in the media are painting it as a bill that violates individual freedom. Which leads me to my last myth Myth: SOPA violates individual freedom. Fact: SOPA protects individual freedom and targets those who violate individual freedom.
