I agree with you I had the same thing happen to me in Bedford a few years ago and I do not believe that it is just wasted. I belive it is given to who they want to have it themselves instead of some one like you that could use it.

seems a shame that such a dumb law would let the meat go to waste.

If the animal is already dead and the person who hits it doesn't want it, then what's the big deal in letting someone else have it if they could benefit from it.

I don't have a lot but I always try to give deer meet to the ones in need if I kill one or two we have a hard time and I know we are not the only ones that are having it hard. but I do try my best to give deer meat to some one in need of meat. I lost my job because I was almost killed in 2002 and I cant work any more. we have two kids and my wife works but we have it hard that why I hunt so we can have meat but the state law need to change. not just for road killed but the once who get a kill permit and want donating the meat to people who could use it ,

Here part of what was on the news today Bedford Co., VA - A Bedford County man wants Virginia to change the law when it comes to road kill. Charles Dickerson wanted to take home a bear that was hit on route 460 in Thaxton Friday night. His daughter was behind the driver who hit the bear. Dickerson said that driver told his daughter he could come pick it up. Dickerson's wife called dispatch to inquire about getting a check tag from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. That's when they learned Virginia code says only the driver who hits a bear or deer can keep the animal. "I tried to go about it the right way,” said Dickerson. “If I had been somebody who didn't care, I could have easily stopped, picked it up, thrown it on my truck and went on about my way. But I tried to do it the legal way." Dickerson plans to talk to lawmakers. Click here to view his petition. http://www.wset.com/story/27653923/bedford-co-man-wants-a-change-in-road-kill-law

Ralph Mayberry it was on the news today and they had talk to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.Virginia code says only the driver who hits a bear or deer can keep the animal. that is why am doing this petition. I know I use to get deer all the time and I work for the state of va for years I was told if its a deer they look away and let you have it because its more deer than bear but the law is only the driver who hits a bear or deer can keep the animal. if you hunt you pay all this money for a Licenses to hunt and most cant hunt that much because of work and its a lot of hunters that don't even kill a deer but the ones who get a kill permit kill the deer and instead of donating the meat to people who could use it , they dig a hole and bury it I know this because its a place that does this ever year close to where I hunt and I don't see the deer like I use to because of it. that is just wrong in my book

One thing I dont like is people hit a buck and cut the antlers off and leave the deer for wast when it's hungry people all throughout Virginia. I think a the law or what have you state a man/woman that cuts antlers off roadkill recently hit should be fined if they dont salvage the meat for themselves or for feed the hungry. But it would save vdot and tax payers money to allow for people that want to pick up recently hit road roadkill to give to someone or donate the meat before it's spoiled. I see lots of meat gone to waste because someone is scared to get a ticket for taking the animal/food. Good luck on this petition

this is not true, I have call county , state, and game warden and put my name to pit up road kill deer. I have picked up countless deer in my years of hunting , even had amherst co to call me to come up on 130 to get a deer, was hit by car and still live, officer say do you mine shooting it, I got my rifle and dispatched the deer , he wrote me a kill stamp and help me load it. so I don't know when you can't get a road kill, all of the ones I picked up was by other people, you right a was of meat when a lot of people can't afford to but meat at the store as I am one of them.

Great idea!! Sure would make vdots job easier, and maybe the side of the roadways a lot cleaner.

Well, I guess I broke the law a few years back when a deer was killed near my house and the motorist did not want it and the police at the scene told me to take it if I wanted it. The car had severe damage. The doe a broken neck and no damage to the meat which was used.

so many animals go to waste when they are left laying there. That meat could feed so many families that are struggling to put meat on the table. My family and myself will stand behind Mr. Dickerson 100%!!
