This is ridiculous. Hunter and Nelo did nothing wrong and at the BARE minimum we need a recount. They won fair and square and I don't even live on campus.

Though I believe they have broken policy. Do we really think that would change anything? How many of the other runners knew of it before it was brought to their attention? I am guessing none, or very little. I can probably guess that others in their situation, would have done the same. I don't think this "soliciting" of votes, would change the outcome of election. If nothing gets change, that's ludicris and unjust. Let the people decide.

Hunter and Nelo did not win because of posters, they won because they make a difference. Changing the penalty because it "was not high enough" is unethical. They obeyed the guidelines of the original penalty thus the votes for them should count.

They are both great RAs and if posting this on our doors is wrong then why do other RAs get to put things on our doors about meetings and other things going on on campus? Hunter and Nelo should not be punished for something that's this petty. The other people running could have easily gotten in to any hall they wanted to and everyone knows that.

I believe when a person votes and our voices speak they should be heard. Voting is how we are heard. They won be a landslide and should be honored their positions in the Senate.

I am definitely not saying that. This petition was not about the other candidates possibly breaking the rules it is about the student body feeling that the penalty that was given to nelo and Hunter was not fare and should be reconsider. If someone else broke the rules then that should be brought up. I just wanted to state what I knew happened so that everyone understands what lead to the current situation.

So you don't bring up the facts how the student Senate ignored the others who bribed for their votes with Raffles and gifts? Talk about an abuse of power and bias.

The election committee had already made a decision on the solicitation policy and Nelo and Hunter's campaign. If you look at the members of student senate, the vast majority of them are individuals who were involved (IE: running) for the offices, OR were close friends of those running. This by definition is a conflict of interest, and as per South Dakokta Law (Title 6-1-17), "No county, municipal, or school official may participate in discussing or VOTE on any issue in which the official has a conflict of interest."
Additionally, the student handbook of DSU states that "Persons or organizations wishing to sell any goods or services to members of the general campus population or to solicit in behalf of any firm, group, cause or candidate may do so in no campus building other than the Trojan Center. " However, according to the first commentator of this post, solicitation did indeed occur in areas other than the Trojan Center. This too is against the student handbook and would, as per the prior decisions of the Student Senate, result in the disqualification of those parties involved.
And finally, I find it extremely hard to believe that Student Senate had no idea of the results of the election prior to voting. Even someone as removed from the situation as I had an extremely accurate guess as to what the final results would be. This entire situation stinks of corruption.

I want my name to not effect the message that I was trying to say I am trying to be unbiased and explain why the Senate made its decision. I am not trying to attack anyone. I support everyone's ability to petition and voice there opinion but I also wanted to make sure that everyone had the facts of the matter so they can make a there own decision with the facts.

First the reason that Nelo and Hunter got in trouble is not because of pettiness it is because they broke several school policies. They broke the solicitation policy that protects students from having propaganda posted on their doors or under their doors. The also broke residents’ privacy by going door to door and sticking things into private rooms. They are also both resident assistants so they have access to all dorms and they abused that power because they had no residence life related reason to be there--only their own personal agenda. Also, as resident assistants they should know this not allowed because they are supposed to read the student manual which outlines the rules. Second the election committee decided that taking away their right to campaign was enough of a penalty to those offenses. During senate on Wednesday the 12th, the Senate then decided that they did not feel that this penalty was high enough, so a senator moved to change this to remove them from ballet and nullify there votes. This was done entirely before the senators knew who won or even roughly what the votes looked like. The results were not announced until the very end of the meeting after the entire incident above was done, and the senate had decided the outcome of the motion before any election results where ever announced.
