As well as making a major contribution to a clean, reliable energy supply for the nation, the construction of the new Hinkley Point C power station would deliver at least 5,000 jobs for Somerset people, many valuable contracts for local firms and a huge investment boost in an area which has suffered from years of underinvestment. These considerable benefits would be particularly welcome in the current economic climate. I therefore fully support the development of Hinkley Point C and in the first instance urge West Somerset Council to approve EDF Energy's application for Site Preparation Works without further delay, so that that this important project can be progressed and its many opportunities realised for the community.
