While researching for Sachin Da’s biography, “cooking up a massala movie”, i got the amazing information that he has written 124 films (counting the released ones, check the list in attachment), more than anybody in the history of cinema. Sachin Da being the most trusted screenwriter is common knowledge in bollywood but this numerical novelty is a revelation even to his regular consulting clients, Sahara, Rakesh Roshan and Subhash Ghai. Starting with 1961 President’s gold medal winner and Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed Anuradha, sachin da went on to write such defining films as Brahmachari, Aradhana, Caravan, Golmal, Karz and Krrish. In an industry full of inspired stories, he brought dozens of fresh original ideas, admittedly copied later by Javed Akhtar to Anees Bazmee. For 50 years he belted out hits after hits, Aayi Milan Ki Bela, Jaanwar, Aaye Din Bahar Ke, An Evening in Paris, Aaya Sawan Jhoom Ke, Pehchan, Aan Milo Sajna, Andaz, Jugnu, Dreamgirl, Khel Khel Mein, Warrant, Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahi, Zamane ko Dikhana Hai, Vidhata, Saaheb, Karma, Saudagar, Yeh Dillagi, Main Khiladi Tu Anadi, Karan-Arjun, Taal, Koi Mil Gaya and many more. Sachin Da is probably the only writer to have written for 4 generations of Great Kapoor family. Besides writing string of hit films for Shammi Kapoor, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna & Rishi Kapoor, he also introduced Jaya Bachchan and current Censor Board chairperson Sharmila Tagore in hindi cinema. While his emotional tales and romantic tracks made superstars out of ordinary actors, it was his comic gems that created india’s only A-list comedian, Mehmood. His mild manners ensured that while his fellow screenwriters retired or fell by wayside he went on to complete first ever writing century in the history of cinema. But his shunning of PR also meant that despite immense talent and unparalleled success ratio he never topped the list of screenwriter in terms of payment or fame. He got the lifetime achievement award in 1989 by the Film Writers’ Association. Ironically, Sachin Da has missed on an entry into Guiness book of world records for want of certified declarations for each of his films by the individual producer. This stipulated requirement of Guiness book publishers is not feasible owing to the anarchic production setup of hindi cinema; as also due to the fact that several of Sachin Da producers have passed away. Realizing the esteem that hindi cinema may command at world stage on acceptance of screenwriting century, some enthusiast have started working on indigenous alternatives to the stipulated requirement of Guiness books. An updated list of 120 released films, written by Sachin Bhaumick is being sent to Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC, Mumbai) and National Film Archives of India (NFAI-Pune) requesting a provisional certificate. Also, coinciding with International Film Festival of India, opening in Goa next Monday, an online petition has been floated urging the Prime Minister to recognise this historic achievement by conferring Padma Bhushan on octogenarian writer. Your cooperation is sought in moulding public opinion in this matter which is crucial to counter the intellectual arrogance of Delhi intelligentsia and its sneer undermining cultural contribution of mainstream hindi cinema. Looking forward to your swift & positive response.
