To the Portland Municipal Corporation, Local Authority of Jamaica:

We the undersigned are urging you to honour Jamaica’s only national heroine by establishing a “Nanny Square” complete with a statue of the 18th-century leader of the Jamaican Maroons - Queen Nanny. Being a legendary leader, Nanny was also known to have “encouraged the continuation of customs [and culture] that had come with the people from Africa, which instilled confidence and pride in the early Jamaicans.”[1] We propose replacing the Port Antonio town clock that hasn’t worked in over 50 years, with a “Nanny Square” that sends a powerful message and has the potential to increase Portland’s economic and cultural appeal.

Calling on all Jamaicans, the Diaspora and all friends of Jamaica. We humbly invite you to join our effort in petitioning the Portland Municipal Corporation to honour the life of this brave woman who became, in her lifetime and after, a symbol of unity and strength.
