Honorary Doctor of Music (D.Mus. Honoris Causa) for Musician Sylver Kyagulanyi
To the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Senate, and Academic Council of Kampala University,We, the undersigned citizens of Uganda, music lovers, alumni, students, cultural advocates, legal professionals, and supporters of excellence in the creative arts, respectfully petition your esteemed institution to confer upon Mr. Sylver Kyagulanyi the honorary degree of Doctor of Music (D.Mus. Honoris Causa) in recognition of his extraordinary and enduring contributions to Ugandan music, culture, education, and society.
Sylver Kyagulanyi is a celebrated Ugandan musician, music producer, songwriter, performer, and advocate. As the director of Sikia Media Services, he has shaped the Ugandan music landscape for over two decades.
Widely regarded as one of the most successful and influential songwriters in Uganda over the last ten years, his body of work has inspired generations, promoted positive values, and elevated Ugandan music both locally and beyond.
His musical journey began humbly in the early 1990s as a soprano in the Christ the King Church choir. In 1995, while still in Senior Three, his composition won the prestigious Youth Alive National Music Festival, marking the start of a remarkable career. During his Senior Six vacation in 1999, he released "Ekyasa Kyabakyala," a powerful song advocating for female emancipation that resonated widely and propelled him forward.
At Makerere University, where he pursued a degree in Music, Dance and Drama (specializing in music) after initially being admitted to Mass Communication, he released the transformative album "Omuzadde Katonda," which significantly changed his fortunes and cemented his place in Ugandan music history.
Many of his songs, including spiritual anthems like "Katonda Gwe nsinza," "Olunaku Luno," and "Tondeka Mukama," draw from his deep Christian grounding and continue to touch hearts, offering comfort, hope, and moral guidance to fans across the country.
His music blends artistic excellence with themes of faith, social justice, empowerment, and national pride, making him a role model for young Ugandans pursuing creative careers.
Beyond music, Sylver Kyagulanyi has demonstrated exceptional versatility and commitment to professional development. In 2018, he earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre (LDC), and in 2019, he was enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda among a cohort of 144 lawyers.
His work as an advocate, particularly in areas related to intellectual property and artists' rights, further underscores his dedication to uplifting the creative industry. An honorary Doctor of Music would be a fitting tribute to a son of Uganda who has:
- Enriched our cultural heritage through timeless, impactful music;
- Mentored and influenced countless emerging artists;
- Promoted values of faith, empowerment, and social good;
- Balanced artistic success with academic and professional achievement in law and also fought for copyright reforms in Uganda.
Conferring this honor would not only celebrate individual excellence but also affirm Kampala University's commitment to recognizing outstanding contributions to Ugandan arts and society, inspiring future generations to pursue excellence in music and beyond.
We humbly urge the Senate to consider and approve the award of the Honorary Doctor of Music (D.Mus. Honoris Causa) to Sylver Kyagulanyi at the earliest possible convocation or appropriate ceremony.
Thank you for your attention to this worthy recognition.
