I grew up in the Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas parish of Staten Island. I went to Greek school and Sunday school there and it’s always felt like home. I also work at Hellenic Classical Charter School though, for 12 years now. There are no words to describe the unique school that we have. I worked in 2 other schools before Hellenic and the environments were horrendous. Just when I was ready to give up on teaching, fate helped me find Hellenic. It was a match made in heaven for me! I work with amazing, warm, supportive people. We are such a close-knit work family! The students attend school in a safe, sound, enriching, family environment. They learn Greek every single day! They learn Greek dance by the TOP instructor in the country, the Greek teachers have been with us for many years so there is consistency. No turn overs. Our students dance at Brooklyn Borough Hall and represent at Bowling Green for the Raising of the Flags for Greek Culture month. The performances put on for OXI DAY, Christmas, and March 25th are remarkable and leave everyone speechless!!! Our National History Day team of students go to Greece each year for research to then compete in city and state competitions and are undefeated! We make the nationals every year! Our Ancient Greek theater group of students also travel to Greece for research each year and then prepare for their grand end of year performance. Last year’s performance of “Iphigenia in Aulis” was so phenomenal that a producer in our audience asked to sign us for his Ted Talks show-Hellenic Classical Charter School edition. We have been working with him all year. Stay tuned for our produced show in June. The list goes on and on and on! We have been a New York State reward school for countless years! We are in the National Herald every other week! We are in it again today-A whole article about what an amazing school we are and how enriching our teaching of the Greek language and culture is! I’m so fortunate to be a part of this school
