Holy Angels housing Calverton Elementary/Middle School
To whom it may concern:
I am writing to express our concerns regarding the possibility of housing Calverton Elementary/Middle School at Holy Angels’ property. While I fully feel all children have the right to an education. We would like to present some distinct differences that make it difficult to see this collaboration working effectively. The parents of Holy Angels have made the necessary sacrifices to pay for the quality of education and safety Holy Angels provides. The Archdiocese has opted to make a decision that directly impacts the educational experiences our children are accustomed to without even the benefit of a conversation or returning our calls. This is completely UNACCEPTABLE.
A part of the Holy Angels Mission Statement speaks of the desire to have a nurturing learning environment. In direct contradiction, the data associated with Calverton Elementary/Middle School indicate the school has a 4 out of 10 overall rating and a 2% passing rate in both mathematics and English Language Arts. This is likely in part, due to the following findings: 677 students, 25% of those students are classified as learning disabled; the school has a 2.4% out of school suspension rating whereas; the median is 1.5% in Maryland, 1.2% expulsion rating, and this does not include school related arrest or law enforcement referrals. The students of Calverton Elementary/Middle School are not committed to the catholic values and will be at the core of our school’s cultures. The student population of Calverton public school outnumbers Holy Angels population by double. In general, it is more likely that our Holy Angels will become more like Calverton than Calverton transitioning or becoming like Holy Angels. The following people also share my sentiments:
I propose we do not pay tuition as the students sharing the space do not have to pay tuition!!! The other option is to find another educational source for our children.
