In light of the growing prevalence of the rampant substance abuse in the entertainment industry, it's time for the industry itself to start taking some accountability! What can Hollywood do? As consumers, we choose where to spend our entertainment dollars - therefore the entertainment industry would not exist without us. As parents, we have the right to choose which celebrities, productions and entertainment corporations we allow our children to be exposed to. We can all take accountability in the stores, movies theatres and our own living rooms by choosing to NOT support entertainment entities that employ and endorse celebrities who are not socially responsible and who are making lifestyle choices that are putting themselves and others at risk. Likewise, the entertainment business has the right to NOT hire, employ or endorse the celebrities in question. Sure there are alot of big-name money-making celebrities that would be inaccessible if Hollywood refused to employ them and the media refused to give them attention. Ultimately money talks and the celebrities that will be the biggest draws, even if it's due to excessive, controversial or irresponsible lifestyles, are the ones who will get the A-list roles and appearances. But at what cost? In the long run, everyone loses - celebrities who are dying from actions and addictions from those around them in their field and those who are cutting their massive paycheques, family friends and loved ones who are devastated by their loss, and impressionable young consumers who are seeing on a growing scale that alcoholism and drug abuse are becoming more and more prevalent and accepted amongst the entertainers that they look up to, minic, and idolize. It is my hope that this petition will, at the very least, start a dialogue amongst everyone - parents and children, media outlets, entertainment corporations and representatives, and entertainers themselves. Yes, addiction is a disease. But as with any other disease, the sufferer is ultimately responsible to seek treatment and adjust their lifestyle accordingly so as to minimize the effects of their disease on themselves and those around them. We as consumers CAN make a difference - by putting some accountability on Hollywood to stop enabling celebrities who are choosing to be active addicts and stop exposing them to an impressionable world of consumers. Give people a REASON to get treatment and control over their disease, instead of feeding it to them. Hold them accountable for their own actions. Reward them for their responsibility and their positive lifestyes by employing them, and stop giving the irresponsible ones notoriety for being train wrecks!
