HKBU should stop imposing General Education courses.

Giving students a possibility to go beyond is remarkable, obliging students to take off-topic courses is not worthy of a tertiary institution. University should be synonym of passion, this passion is mostly reflected through the majors. Unfortunately, students are all majoring in GE giving that the majority of their time consists of GE courses... sadly... Regards,

I believe everyone student has the freedom to choose what they like to study.

It's not mecessary for students to prepare things that are not directly related to their study field or career path.The reason why students have to choose their own majors in university is that they can get rid of sth that they r not good at and be able to specialise in a particular field.It's meaningless to promote General Education in university.Personally,i think physical education is acceptable as it is beneficial to our well-beings.But I can't see any reasons why a BA student has to tore for mathematics or anything that is not related to what they excel in.

We have only four years to explore our own field of interest, which is barely enough to do so. Please stop the unnecessary lessons that act as barricades for us from reaching to our own goals.

I'm an alumni from BU, those statements are so true, it did take me plenty of time in taking courses I don't like! Mandarin is one of them

Students should be able to choose their own courses. It is absolutely true that they should first excel in their major study and what interests them. The current compulsory GE courses should change to optional indeed..

Thanks for your comment. I am glad to see that you share the same thoughts. It is even worse to see that - for some students - GE can have such an impact on the grades. As I say, giving the possibility to take a variety of courses if fine but forcing students to do so is pointless and only aimed at worsening the situation. It all depends in which university you are and where you did your associate degree. While the 4 years curriculum has been implement in all universities in Hong Kong, some universities do not have pointless GE requirements as HKBU does. In some universities, GE is seen as an option while in the case mentioned, it is an obligation ( 'requirement' as the administration says ). The whole concept of Whole Person Development is a scam... 'Whole Person Development' is used by certain universities in the US and sadly by one in Hong Kong as a way to make advertisement, marketing, in other words: as a stock in trade. 'Sad' is the word as universities in Hong Kong have great resources as well as great academic staff. Unfortunately - in this case- the administration interferes and undermines the whole purpose of what a university should be. Professors are also affected by such requirements as it gives them less time to specialize and focus on researches... This also strongly undermines academic freedom as I mentioned previously. Unfortunately, this is most likely the reason why university ranking in Hong Kong is decreasing as there is less innovation... In fact, Hong Kong has recently been criticized for lacking of innovation, the last major HK invention being referred as the Octopus card back in 1998. There is so much potential, let's hope that we can truly make use of it and give a halt to superficiality. Best,
