I am surprised to learn about this and look forward to the news that this program is reinstated under expert direction. The arts are important and exciting, and for some kids the only thing that keeps them strong.

My son is a senior and has participated in theatre since the fifth grade. He now plans to study theatre in College (mostly because Mr. Price inspired him at a young age and is still working with Brian to develop his talents). I would love to see a more comprehensive theatre program in the schools at DHHS.

As a theatre educator who lives in Madison and teaches at a New Haven Pre-K-8, I find it appalling that my alma mater does not offer Theatre Arts as part of its curriculum. I'd be happy to meet with anyone to discuss the benefits, and how without the arts I never would have survived my adolescence in Madison.

The Theater Arts program at Hand High School is a cornerstone in the engagement of artistically expressive students. We want all students to feel there is a positive and school supported subculture for belonging. According to developmental theorists, the primary developmental task of kids between the ages of 12 and 18 is to establish positive group identity; the developmental alternative is alienation. Youth in Madison who are athletically inclined have a multitude of opportunities to create positive peer networks that support development of group identity. Madison youth who are more artistically inclined have fewer opportunities to build connections through shared interests. Please make sure Theater Arts is available so that these students find their group identity at school, in a prosocial environment, with the guidance of adults.

The performing arts are a big part of Madison culture. Let's not take away the opportunity to explore theater in the classroom by not rehiring a Theater Arts teacher.

Theater is very important to our family. My sons have both participated in theater classes in the Madison public schools since 5th grade. Both are passionate about it. Theater is a creative outlet that no other subject (or sport) can replace. We are hoping that a theater class will be available during the school day at Hand High School next year. Thank you.

Continuing the tradition of a strong Theater Arts program is important for our school. Studies continually demonstrate the important academic impacts of Drama programs on student achievement, including higher SAT scores: http://www.aate.com/?page=effects
