We, the undersigned, support the National Portrait Gallery in its decision to curate and host the exhibition, "Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture." As a nation founded upon the ideals of liberty, freedom and the First Amendment, we believe that censorship of the exhibition is unwarranted and unwelcome in a free society. We therefore condemn the removal of work by David Wojnarowicz from the exhibition. Art can and should at times be challenging, and we feel that art should be the basis of dialogue and debate, not iconoclasm.
