Support Local Food - Let Haligonians Raise Hens

I too want to raise chicken but the cockamamie rules that won’t let county people have chickens is ludicrous. The county people had chickens way before this city was amalgamated.

I want to raise a few chickens and have fresh eggs for breakfast!!!

I was a resident of gebhardt st in fairview and now live in boutiliers point. While I now enjoy the freedom of having my own flock due to MMU1 zoning, I have also seen and learned how a small flock can be extremely beneficial to the urban dweller! Please allow "wannabe backyarders" to keep a few hens! It helps not only them and their children (if they have them) but their communities and neighbours as well! (Bug control - darn those black flies and skeeters!)

The right to feed ourselves is ancient and very healthy for people and the planet. It also makes for more vibrant and resilient communities.

I would love to raise chickens in my yard, it would give people some knowledge of having a small part in knowing what they are putting in their bodies. they would probably do less harm then the cats pooping in my yard.

Which came first, the chicken or the vote to let it lay eggs in the back yard? Seems obvious, let people feed themselves. Asparagus, bees, chickens -- a city alphabet.

I suggest tax rebates and grants to any who will keep chickens, they are so valuable to society and ecology! The resilience of growing even part of one's own food is extremely valuable to all

My experience of urban hen keeping is that it is no more dangerous to the population than feeding wild birds, much less dangerous than allowing people to let their cats wander outdoors without supervision, and far more beneficial than keeping non-productive pets. I don't find that urban hens make a lot of noise, nor is there any noticeable smell. As for attracting vermin, feeding wild birds accomplishes that, and I've never heard that Council intends to curtail the feeding of wild birds. Other large cities have begun to allow residents to keep hens; if Halifax truly wants to be a world-class city, we need to keep up with the times. I support hen-keeping in Halifax.

I fully support the keeping of backyard chickens.

We are rural here, so many of us keep chickens. I'm signing this petition because I see no problem whatsoever with urban residents keeping chickens, growing gardens instead of lawns etc. Gov't has no business in the food cupboard of the nation (to coin a phrase).
