Stuart Hall provides a safe, comfortable and consistent space for PGRs to study without stress, developing meaningful relationships and being able to focus. It would be very sad if we lose this building because these elements are critical to the successful completion of a PhD.

If the conditions of the new building are as described, it is a regrettable choice to move the students to a crowded and noisy location. It will not only have an impact on the results, but, ironically, also on the wellbeing of the students. I have a residency waiver as I live further away from MK, but I fully support this petition because I use my desk whenever I am on campus, and I would not want to be forced to work in an unsuitable environment.

Also to add: we were told we need to 'use it or lose it', re: the third floor of Stuart Hall. This is particularly unfair, because it places the responsibility on the international students who do come to the office, while the UK students are given residency waivers. (The 2022 WELS cohort comprised 11 PGRs; the 5 UK students were given residency waivers.) Ironically, it is the international students, who often don't have homes or families in the UK, who need a nurturing, safe space conducive to research. This plan to move us from the third floor of Stuart Hall is robbing us of that space.
