This petition is being jointly made by the residents of the apartment complex @ 1405 W 34th Street, Houston, TX 77018, and the congregation members of the place of worship - International Society for Krishna Consciousness of Houston Inc. (ISKCON of Houston) located @ 1320 W 34th St, Houston, TX. Our apartments have 21 units which are currently fully occupied. At ISKCON of Houston, over a thousand members including 150+ children participate in our daily services each week. Recently a third-party contractor hired by the city, to support construction on Shepherd Street, rented the property next to us (1247 W.34th Street) at least for next 3 years. They started to use it as an intermediate workplace, to make mixtures of sand, cement, and other chemicals to be transported to construction sites. In addition to the exhaust plumes from all the construction vehicles and dump trucks, the whole process sprays dust, cement, and chemicals into the air creating a hazardous environment affecting the residents of our apartment and the congregation members of our place of worship. As this activity is happening within 20 feet of the perimeter of our apartments & our place of worship, we are highly concerned that this will affect the health of the residents and our regular members. We have several children and residents with respiratory issues, many infants, and very young children - that are at health risk. In addition to the dust and pollution, the noise from construction vehicles pounding on the sand is horrible. The noise on average is about 70 to 80 dB and intensely peaks when large metal pipes are dropped, JCB pounds the sand, and dump trucks slam their tailgates. These sound levels and air pollution with dust particles are adversely affecting the daily meditation & worship practiced by our congregation members. Please help us breathe fresh air again by canceling the permit for doing this commercial activity near a residential place & next to a place of worship that’s visited daily by hundreds of Houstonians to perform their religious practices.
