Help to Change Pet Policy at Van Ness North Cooperative (VNNC)
I’m hoping to get help from a current resident at VNNC in Washington, DC to change the pet policy to be the same as the Van Ness East Condos (2 cats per unit). I’ve been told that only a current resident can petition residents for this change. I lived at VNNC 20 years ago and I'm thinking about moving back, but I can’t get rid of my cat. VNNC is a wonderful place to live. This change would benefit all VNNC residents with minimal, if any, impact on residents who choose not to have cats.

This would benefit all residents since in October 2014, there are five listings at VNNC and three have been reduced in price due to the amount of time on the market (Unit 1207 listed 5/20/14 for $495k reduced to $479,500 Unit 606 listed 8/1/2014 for $275k reduced to $265k, and Unit 824 listed 9/18/2014 for $244,900 reduced to $242k). According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 30.4% of American households have cats. The current pet policy is eliminating this share of the market since people are not willing to give up their pets. I’m sure that even if a current resident is not considering selling now, they are still concerned about the value and marketability of their unit.

The following statements support the change to the policy.
-
(1) Increase the number of people interested in living at VNNC by including cat owners/lovers (30.4% of American households have cats)
(2) No impact on neighbors – meows not loud enough to be heard outside unit, don’t need to be taken outside the unit
a. There are several local vets providing at home veterinaryservices; therefore, owners would not have to take the pet to the vet for care
b. Pet sitters who are licensed and bonded are easily available to take care of the cats in the unit when owners are out of town
c. Cats can be self contained in the unit since they don’t have to be walked
(3) Clean themselves (don’t require baths) and don’t need toilet training
(4) Excellent company and require minimal care
-
I’m sure VNNC residents would like to help homeless cats receive a loving home, even if they don’t want to adopt themselves, especially since the change would not impact anyone’s lifestyle except the people who would like to adopt. At the same time it would improve the marketability, therefore, the value of all units. Unfortunately, dogs and birds, no matter how well behaved, do impact neighbors since they’re louder and dogs can’t be self contained. That’s why I’m only proposing 2 cats per unit.

Thank you very much and I sincerely hope that current residents agree and would support this change. No signatures yet. Be the first one!
