When people have a serious mental illness and commit a crime, oftentimes they are charged not criminally responsible and, although in some cases still go to jail for an amount of time, are sent to the psychiatric ward where they can at least receive care. This is not the case in Whitehorse, Yukon. Under the law, its correctional center doubles as a psychiatric facility, but many of the residents of Whitehorse and inmates who have been there say this is not the case, and that the mentally ill inmates need more care and better treatment. An audit found that the population of the jail had three times the mental health issues as people outside of the prison, and of the people in the prison, 17.5% have FASD compared to the 1% in the rest of the Yukon. Another government report found that as far as psychiatric care goes, the mentally ill inmates are only getting two hours weekly. This petition is asking that the government build a proper psychiatric ward inside the Whitehorse correctional center, or at least extend the hours of psychiatric care with more staffing, potentially.
