The government has authorized the funding package to address the immediate housing and infrastructure crisis in Attawapiskat. I will be monitoring the implementation process to ensure every dollar reaches the site for construction start dates. This result is the direct product of our sustained pressure on the ministry.

Currently there is a Canadian community that needs our help! The Attawapiskat First Nation community in James Bay has declared a state of emergency. "Presently there are five families living in tents; 19 families living in sheds without running water; 35 families living in houses needing serious repair; 128 families living in houses condemned from black mould and failing infrastructure; 118 families living with relatives (often 20 people in a small home); there are 90 people living in a construction trailer. There's a need for 268 houses just to deal with the immediate backlog of homelessness." The elementary school in the area shut down awhile ago, and the quality of water in this area is causing rashes to break out on the faces of children. The government isn't doing anything to help so we need to make them! Please sign this petition to let the government know that you care about these very vulnerable people. No one should have to live in conditions like this. Here is an article for more information: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/charlie-angus/attawapiskat-emergency_b_1104370.html#s487209

Updates

November 24, 2011

I am currently finalizing a formal letter to the Ministry of Indigenous and Northern Affairs detailing the specific housing crisis data. This document outlines the immediate need for infrastructure repairs and serves as our primary lever for the upcoming meeting request.

The scale of support reached today confirms that the conditions in Attawapiskat can no longer be ignored by federal authorities. I am currently drafting a formal letter to the Ministry of Indigenous Services to demand an immediate technical assessment of the housing backlog. Expect an update once the ministerial office confirms receipt of our correspondence.

Our First Nations people need help now. They need the right help and they need it now. No more stalling and doing nothing. This is Canada's most pressing challenge -- to help our own people. They can not continue to live with nothing -- no clean water, no housing. This is an emergency that has to be addressed now.

Get the water fixed. Nobody should have to deal with rashes from their own tap. This is basic human dignity.

TOTAL NEGLECT. The government needs to stop ignoring these people and get them into real houses.

How is this happening in Canada? It is absolutely heartbreaking to read about these families living in sheds. Fix this now.

Deeply shamefully situation. A case of true neglect from a wealthy nation.
