Far from unobtrusive. As a local resident, I can no longer use the alleyway on weekends as it is entirely blocked by 30+ customers sitting on the floor outside. I used to enjoy walking my dog down this alleyway for many years, playing ball with him there, and now it's taken up by Teakha to make more money from increased clientele seating.

Yes, Teakha used to have a perfect seating arrangement which didn't block the alleyway (as seen in the photo at the top of this petition), but now they've become popular and ran out of space, they rented the next door unit, and when that got full, they placed a fake grass matt across the entire alleyway and encourage people to sit, blocking the entire alleyway.
This has prevented me, a local resident, from using a thoroughfare (I would walk down this alleyway to head up to Caine Road from my building) and also from walking my dog down it and playing ball with him as I have done for many years before.
Teakha are not just using the space to improve HK, but to improve their own profit by increasing customer space.

What about the rights of the local residents to use the back alley?
It's a public space, so what right has Teakha to use the space more than the local residents?
Teakha is using it not just for your sake, but also to make more money from having increased seating.
I find it quite selfish and disrespectful to the local residents who used to use the alleyway (I'm one of them). I can no longer walk my dog and enjoy a quiet, peaceful alleyway. Instead it's filled with paying customers blocking what was once a thoroughfare for the locals.

Not if it's blocking the entire alleyway, which it is doing.
What was once a public thoroughfare has now become Teakha's own space to serve more customers to make more money.
As a local resident, I find this blockage a nuisance as I can no longer walk my dog down there (I live above) or play ball with him as I have done the last 6 years.

Actually it's not just pedestrians complaining. The blockage of the alleyway is a nuisance to the local residents (I'm one of them) that used to use it as a thoroughfare (I know at least a dozen residents that have complained about it). Most weekends when I enjoy walking my dog down the alleyway where I live, it's impassable due to the number of customers they have sitting there.
Teakha's old seating arrangement was fine, until they decided to block the entire width of the alleyway with a green matt, which is selfish and greedy and disrespectful, purely so they can fit more customers to make more profit.
I have no problem with Teakha using the space, but use it wisely and with pedestrians as well as local residents in mind.

Firstly, I agree with you that the city should be encouraging better use of outdoor space, especially for al-fresco dining and cafes. Also better use of public space for cultural activites.
But in this case, as a local resident, I totally disagree with you with regards to Teakha. This is an annoyance to the community. Many of my neighbours complain about the noise and foot traffic caused by the blockage of the alleyway. I myself cannot walk through on weekends when I use the alleyway to go shopping on my way up to Caine Road, or walk my dog and have to make a detour around the block.
Some of the local residents have already gone downstairs to complain about the noise, especially the times when live music performances are staged. My front door has also been blocked by the flea markets that popup on the weekends that are promoted by Teakha too.
The space afforded by Tai Ping Shan Street and the surrounding alleyways are very limited. I believe Teakha should be allowed limited space without blocking the entire thoroughfare. There needs to be a balance, with respect to the local residents.
This is PUBLIC space, and should not be used purely for Teakha's own commercial gain. They used to have seating purely against the walls without obstructing the alleyway, but as their business grew they started taking up more and more of this space, taking it away from the local residents.

As a local resident, I unfortunately disagree with you, as do quite a few of the local residents I have also spoken with.
Teakha's use of the alleyway is far from unobstrusive. It entirely blocks the alleyway and prevents people from getting past.
Use of public space should be respectful and be fair for all parties. The way it's currently being used is purely in the interest of Teakha and its customers. It's not Teakha's space, it's PUBLIC space (i.e. for all people).

We should be encouraging more of such small creative uses of public spaces, which are sensitively and purposefully done with the community in mind. Cities and their fabric are not only buildings, but are equally people, their rituals and shared moments, and the places they choose to stop and linger for a while… In a city that is continually at top speed, HK needs more pockets like Teakha's back alley space.
