With harsh winters in many states such as Pennsylvania, rock salt has been being used since 1941. A lot of people didn't realize the problems caused by rock salt, including me. Once it was brought to my attention I realized how bad it is, so I wanted to bring it to everyone's attention. Rock salt causes the United States around 5 billion dollars a year in damages. Those damages include cars, truck, roads, and bridges. This isn't the only problem, rock salt can infiltrate ground water which can run into streams, rivers, lakes, and even our drinking water. Not only are we affected by the damage it causes to our vehicles and water, but also the wildlife around us. By the rock salt getting into the fresh water around us it kills fish, eggs, and larva due to the salt. With all the deer in our area the rock salt attracts them because they love licking the salt which can lead to them getting killed or killing the driver. The rock salt expands taking in the water from the ice and snow causing soil erosion, concreate damage, and damage to metal. So please sign this petition to help grab attention to government officials and take action and come up with an alternative to the rock salt and the problems it's causing.
