The Aim: To assure that the citizens of Europe maintain personal privacy and basic human rights when using technology. The goal here is to make sure digital technology is not opened up to mass European government surveillance in order to protect personal freedom, privacy, data and information.

The Concern: On November 16th, 2016 the House of Lords approved the final version of the Investigatory Powers Bill Act providing clear and transparent methods for powers already in use by the security and intelligence services.

The bill brings up questions and concerns about confidential communications between lawyers and clients, journalistic resource exposure, unjustified technology interference, abuse of powers to undermine Parliament’s ability to hold the Government accountable and business computer privacy.

Since the bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament and the Queen signified her royal assent to the Investigatory Powers Act 2016 on November 29th, 2016 there have been plenty of issues brought up by various human rights group

In January 2016 a report released by the Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament recommended that the act should focus on the right to privacy and there is still much debate on if this is being done correctly.

The European Government and its allies must come together and provide the following for the people:

1. Blocking of the governments ability to lie about origins of evidence in court

2. Disallow the impugn of individual freedoms

3. Stop government bodies from mass surveillance and unwarranted technology evaluations

The Solution: If we continue to pressure the European government and their allies to act by making them aware of the potential problems posed by the bill reform becomes possible.
