Did you know on average 150-200 organisms become extinct each day? This number is nearly 1000 times the background rate and the highest it has been since the extinction of the dinosaurs. With this constant extinction of organisms we can't help but wonder why and how this relates to humans and our ecosystems. Organisms are each important to the function and sustainability of the ecosystem. Without just one organisms the balance of the ecosystem will be affected and can lead to the increase or decrease of other organisms, changes in our habitat and climate, and lack of biodiversity.

The cause of the current extinction rate is almost solely caused by humans. Acts by humans including over-hunting, deforestation, agriculture, introduced diseases, introduced invasive-species, and large-scale environmental degradation via pollution have all contributed to the endangerment of species.. Animals and plants (including humans) depend on each other as well as abiotic factors to keep our entire system continuing. In a sense humans are killing our own ecosystem. The constant rate of extinction will have and are having negative effects for our ecosystem.

In our current day and age we are losing dozens of organisms on a daily bases. We allow for so much death of other organisms that it almost seems that this is not important. In reality our allowing this to continue is causing will have detrimental effects in our ecosystem. Organism insure biodiversity and without that we can only hope for the best for our ecosystem’s future. Humans must come together and halt this event before the effects are permanent, only us in unison can send this catastrophe.
