We propose that piercings be permitted in the workplace because it promotes individuality amongst employees. Times are changing and just because employees have piercings does not mean that their performance will not meet criteria. This is shown by the fact that tattoos are currently allowed and these employees are successful. Some customers, young and old, feel that self expression is healthy and beautiful and they express this by giving out compliments. By having managers/superiors discourage this type of expression, it puts a strain on the employees’ ability to work at their full potential.

How does it promote individuality among employees?

People identify in different ways. Piercings are a form of art in today’s society. Most associate tattoos as the only “real” form of body art but not everyone is the same. If having piercings is what one considers to be their form of self identity then they should be able to showcase that without feeling the threat of disapproval. We are in unity as a workplace when everyone wears their uniforms and piercings would allow for a little variation amongst us.

Why it’s essential to let people express themselves.

Whether a new Shoprite employee knows it or not, friendships will be made within each department. When a person meets with the same people everyday to get a job done, teamwork will be put to good use, bonds will form. People need to accept the differences within one another in order to work as a team. Everyone’s success in the workplace rides on acceptance from others--co-workers, bosses, customers, etc. When superiors put such strict limitations on self expression, it doesn't allow for personal growth among employees.
