The new commissioners were chosen to work in the best interests of the Oceanside community. The sanitation workers are part of the community and they are vital to the overall health of the community. Building a new garage is not in the best interests of the community. The existing structure functions well enough, and improvements can be included in the budget.
The best interests of the community would be far better served with a budget that addresses the egregious disparity between the current contract for the sanitation workers of Oceanside and those covering workers in the surrounding communities. It is shameful that the wages under the current contract cannot support a family who resides in Oceanside.
Any municipal construction project is budgeted at a cost which inevitably winds up late and far more expensive than projected. Isn't it better to use those resources to invest in the people in the community? The workers who live in Oceanside spend their money in Oceanside - and care about doing their jobs as well as possible to benefit themselves and their neighbors. They've taken care of the residents - and did a heroic job after Sandy. Isn't it time the people of Oceanside took care of them just a little?
It is a sad reality that power corrupts. A person is elected to a position of power and decides to ignore the wishes of those who put him into office. He wants a legacy... he knows better than the masses.. he enjoys bossing people around and making decisions for them. He convinces himself that he is making these choices in the best interests of his constituency. Even the most well-intentioned officials can do more harm than good when they forget who brought them into power. And the corrupt ones make choices in their own best interests.
Oceanside residents need to ask themselves "Who benefits from the construction of a new garage? Who gets the contract to build it? Who is connected to those contractors? "

These guys work hard, regardless of the weather (extreme heat, cold, snow, rain, etc). They deserve to be paid well for their dedication & hard work.

How have we as a country become so complacent. Disregarding the people that make it possible for us to go about our daily lives in relative comfort. We are oblivious to these services and the people who provide them. Such a shame!

Most of these men grew up in Oceanside
and still live here. I see them at little league, dance, etc. Some are volunteer fire fighters, helping out in the community. They're working thirty years in the elements and putting their body through abnormal stress. Yes, they accepted the job. Yes, they can leave. But that doesn't negate that it's politics as usual at Oceanside Sanitation. Meaning, someone at the top is gaining (some disturbing rumors surrounding this proposed project) and the work force is losing out. A third year sanitation worker in other districts makes more than a ten year worker at Oceanside sanitation. It's not a secret. All of the new commissioners have ran their campaign on promising to remove the old regime and finally taking care of the work force. The five board members under the Scarlatta's are out. There is a new general supervisor, who used to be one of the work force and five new commissioners. Yet, here they are, still fighting for fare wages. Apparently, so is the general supervisor. He feels he's under paid as well. It's sad, really. Honor your word, commissioners.

It seems like no matter who we elect in there, their intention is never to help the workers. The guys who are cleaning up our streets, doing all the work. Without them, we don't have a sanitation department. Does anyone realize how expensive it is to live, especially in Nassau county, in Oceanside. These are guys with families, small children, children in college. They should be the first priority - and some air conditioning for all the trucks would be nice too, not just "some." I guess heat exhaustion is not a high concern for anyone.
