The Saskatoon SPCA will not be commenting on specific animals in our care, but if someone is denied a pet they claim is theirs, it is because through the redemption process we found that individual was not the rightful owner.
Founded in 1968, and empowered as a humane society by the Government of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon SPCA cares for approximately 4,000 lost and homeless animals each year. We do everything in our power to reunite animals with their rightful owners. Reuniting lost pets with their families is a top priority for us.
Our redemption process is designed to ensure that only the rightful owner of a pet is able to redeem the pet. In the case of “desirable” breeds – for example toy breeds, and purebred type pets - it is not uncommon for individuals to claim that a pet is theirs, when in fact it is not.
To prevent someone who is not that pet’s owner from falsely redeeming that pet, we require claimants to provide adequate proof of ownership: pictures of the pet in their care, veterinary records, bills of sale, city licenses, groomers bills, and so on. In many cases, a person believes or claims a pet as their own, brings in pictures and other documents related to ownership, and when these are reviewed, it turns out the pet is not in fact their pet.
After legal holding times, and health and behaviour assessments, pets move through our adoption processes. We want to clarify that Saskatoon SPCA never makes a profit on our adoptions. In fact, we “lose” money because the costs of daily care, vaccinations, spay/neuter, microchip, dental treatments and any additional veterinarian care and grooming our pets receive far outstrip the fees we make from adoptions.

This young lady has bred this dog! She has had enough suffering, why is the SPCA adding to it? Give her dog back to her!
