We are trying to widen a doorway from the shop to the kitchen (our smooth plaster unadorned back wall). We were refused because the conservation officer on the norwich council - deems the alteration unnecessary for continued commerce in a grade 2 listed building. but, same officer has approved changes in a grade 1 listed building (of more historical importance) - guess who owns the building - the council. the english heritage on their website says a listed building is not frozen in time - but with approval - can be altered for modern needs - i paraphrased - but please follow link to see in their own words http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/caring/listing/listed-buildings/ english heritage - despite these words on their site - are giving the conservation officer their support in his decision - without an on-site inspection. why do we need to widen the doorway? - NEW RANGE - ORDERED AND PAID FOR - WILL NOT FIT. - REPLACE OLD FRYING RANGE WITH A MODERN ECO FRIENDLY SAFE MODEL - PROVIDE FIRE ESCAPE ACCESS AT BOTH ENDS - A FIRE WOULD START IN THE MIDDLE - LOWER SEATING AND TABLE FOR AN ALL ACCESS AREA - THIS WILL BENEFIT ANYONE NOT ABE TO SIT AT THE TALL BENCH. WHETHER YOU ARE A WHEELCHAIR USER, BABY PRAM DRIVER - OR AN ELDERLY DINER - YOU TOO WILL HAVE A SEAT AT THE TABLE. PLEASE NOTE - THE CONSERVATION OFFICER DID NOT SEE THIS AS A SIGNIFICANT ISSUE.
