Being trans isn't a "new thing". Transgender people have existed forever and it's wonderful that people have the resources now to figure it out before their lives are almost over. Transgender people are as diverse as any other group with only one common feature. Transitioning, socially, legally, and/or medically, allows them to live happy and normal lives as their true selves, which everyone wants for the people they love.

I knew I was masculine at 15, and I'm turning 30 this year, so I guess that's just one heck of a phase, huh?

Much love to you and your family. It's hard to be confronted with the fact that a loved one is trans, but YOUR identity is more important!

Being trans is not a phase. And the only reason people say we only make up 1% of the population is because we live in a time where many people are unable to come out, forced into denial about their gender or just confused because they don't know the terms to describe why they feel a certain way. Some people realize they are trans at a very young age, but people can make this realization at any point in life.
