As a Nursing Student at the University of Illinois, I am strongly opposed to the closing of the Center for Women and Families in Pilsen. The clinic provides vital treatment for an underserved population of Spanish-speaking immigrant women and children who cannot easily access care elsewhere. I believe that by closing the clinic, UIC is effectively abandoning care of a vulnerable group of patients in Pilsen. This is in direct contradiction to the University's mission statement, which explicitly promises to provide healthcare to underserved communities. For these reasons and more, I encourage the CEO, CFO, CMO, and COO of the University of Illinois Hospital to reconsider the decision to close the Pilsen clinic based on ethical obligations to patients and educational opportunities for students. Thank you.
I have been staring at the university mission statement for hours and it just keeps feeling more hollow while I think about those clinics in Pilsen. Someone from the administration actually emailed me back today but they were being so vague about the future of the center that I almost threw my phone across the room because why is it so hard to just do the right thing for these families.

I honestly never thought we would see this kind of momentum when I first wrote this up in a total panic between classes. It is wild to see how many people actually care about what happens to the clinic so thank you for sticking with me while I figure out the next step for talking to the hospital heads.

The hospital is making a huge mistake. Do the right thing and keep the doors open for pilsen families.

Pilsen needs this clinic! Stop looking at the budget and start looking at the people who actually live here.

Keep it open. The women in this area depend on these services and nobody else is stepping up to help them.

Ridiculous. They say they care about the community but then they shut down the places we actually use.
