The island really needs a small to medium sized “real” grocery store.

97217 - I live on Hayden Island and miss having a grocery store here. I don't drive, so the loss of a grocery on the island was really unfortunate.

It was hard to adjust moving to the island with only one place to buy good produce and groceries( Safeway was that place). I was blessed tto be near a Fred Meyer, QFC, Whole Foods and a Safeway in NE Portland. Moving to island in 2017 was hard for other reasons, but of all the stores I was used to having I was joyed there was at least a Safeway.
Im aware there were more than just commercial and legal reasons why they had to shut down, I know there were dollars stolen on a regular basis. and items not being purchased, and I know that that has risen from the homeless and less fortunate in that particular area. So what I see now on the island is 4+ mattress stores that bring little to none customers and a seasonal Halloween store that could profit 4 times as much if there were a Winco, QFC or even better a Safeway. Whatever it ends up being needs to have the appropriate LOSS PREVENTION procedures, that are as simple as checking IDs no matter what they look like, closing one entrance at a schedueled time in the evening to prevent theft , and having more security personnel to prevent those with bad intentions from even lingering around waiting for an opportunity. and making the community feel safe to go to their community grocery store at any hour of the day, and I feel that should be common sense.
