No warning of the date but, on 1 Novemeber, all the street lights on our estate were turned off at midnight by the local council. A justification was that it would reduce crime (they're joking aren't they?) whereas the truth is it is a cost-cutting exercise. Are we living in the Victorian ages? Apart from the fact that my little street light is a godsend when I have to get up in the night and not disturb my husband as I can see where I am going, it was very upsetting to look out of the window and see absolutely pitch black nothingness. If an unusual noise is heard, you would see nothing! Imagine your daughter, or son, was walking home from visiting friends (12 is not that late); can ambulances see the house number?; someone on your drive trying to steal your car; someone stealing items from your garden etc. etc! They needn't wear hoodies any more, no-one would be able to identify them. I am disgusted that such a small thing that I have known for 59 years is suddenly taken away with no choice. I feel like it's get to bed before lights out! Please join this petition and make our streets non-Victorian, safer and give back a small feeling of comfort and safety.
