Harper Adams to show support for British Farming
To the Students of Harper Adams University,
I hope this letter finds you well. As members of the Harper Adams community, we share a strong connection to its rich heritage and focus on agriculture, engineering, and land-based industries. These fields have been the backbone of Harper Adams’ identity, and they are what drew many of us to this institution in the first place.
Harper Adams was once renowned for its dedication to supporting agricultural students and those pursuing careers in rural sectors. Yet, in recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in priorities, which has left many feeling that the university no longer places its students’ needs at the forefront. This is particularly evident in its lack of engagement on key agricultural issues.
A recent example is the university’s muted response to the budget announcement. While the farming community faces significant challenges, the only acknowledgment we received was a brief statement of solidarity. The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) was not involved, and there was no detailed analysis or commentary on how the budget would affect farmers, the food supply chain, or the agricultural economy. This lack of engagement undermines the university’s historical role as a leader and advocate for the agricultural sector. It’s troubling that Harper Adams seems to have moved away from supporting its primary community—students and professionals in agriculture and related disciplines.
It is crucial that Harper reconnects with its roots and prioritizes its core mission: empowering students and supporting the industries that are the backbone of our rural economy.
Let us remind the university of the importance of staying true to its purpose and ensuring that the future of agriculture remains at the heart of its strategy. Together, we can strive to ensure that Harper Adams regains its standing as a leader in these critical fields.
Regards.
