Please request for the WS/FCS Board of Education to gift Hanes-Lowrance school to the City of Winston-Salem to be repurposed as a Transformational and Transitional Community Center.
This center will seek to achieve three goals:
- Provide accessible wrap around services
- Economic development and empowerment programs
- Address housing needs as well as provide assistance for the homeless
In 1963, Hanes-Lowrance was deeded to the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools by the city of Winston-Salem. After nearly 7 years of vacancy, a request has been made to the Board of Education asking that the Hanes-Lowrance School property be gifted to the City of Winston-Salem. im still working on getting a meeting set up with the board members to show them how much this building means to our neighborhood. its been quiet behind the scenes but please know i havent stopped pushing for us to turn this space into something that actually helps people.

im honestly kind of stunned by the momentum this is picking up lately. it feels like people are finally seeing how much potential this space has for the city and i couldnt be more grateful for the support.

These buildings are an important part of the educational struggle for our urban community. To make an educational facility a garage deals a heavy blow to the rich history and legacy of those that served our Black communities during a time of struggle and a time when equality and access to a quality education was being fought for by many great leaders. Creating space that benefits the community and helps alleviate some of the issues currently plaguing the community is the BEST and most equitable use of the space. I implore you to gift the property back to the City of Winston Salem so it can be used as a resource for the community.
Hanes Middle School is a beautiful historical building in the urban community I grew up in. I have been working hard to rehabilitate this neighbor a garage will not just take down the value but turn area industrial area versus a community of for families. Right now it looks horrible with dumping ithe furniture and the school not keep up the property has made our urban community look bad. Turning into a garage I can only imagine how awful that will take from our beautiful I’m trying to rehabilitate. NO GARAGE
Would love to see our community used to enhance people’s lives to give them easy access to programs within our communities.
Perfect solution for the building! The surrounding area is in need of this type facility!
Really excited for this project and the lives its going touch in the process. Can't think of any other ward that needs this center the most than our 27105 district.
