am an APSVA parent living in Dover Crystal who educated two daughters through Taylor-Williamsburg-Yorktown. Why is it that school facilities are either under renovation/construction, followed immediately by overcrowding and trailers —or under-enrollment and then redistricting? Swingwing back to busing students more than 2 miles to Williamsburg is a waste of time and fuel. This decision would be inconsistent with Arlington County’s values to be a sustainable, walkable community.

Hamm is part of our community, especially when we have kids who are already in the school. This is a stupid plan that would force students to go to a school miles away when Hamm is blocks away.

As a former student of Williamsburg middle school, it is horrendous that the board is trying to bus students to WMS instead of keeping them in walking distance. It goes against every green initiative the school board claims to be for

While I wholeheartedly agree with maximizing APS’s resources and think it is beneficial to consider redistricting so that one school isn’t under-utilized while another is at capacity, I think that drawing the line for Hamm at Lorcom is completely absurd. I live 1000ft from Dorothy Hamm on the other side of Lorcom and my children could not attend the school under this proposal. Instead, they would have to travel 17 times that distance (3 miles) to Williamsburg. I think it would be infinitely smarter to change the boundaries on the outer periphary.
For context:
*Dorothy Hamm Middle School is the closest non-residential building to my house. It is the closest non-house to my house. No other business or governmental building is closer to my home than Dorothy Hamm.
*If I walk approximately 60 ft from my property I can physically see Dorothy Hamm Middle School.
*If the wind isn’t against me, I can take my driver from my golf bag, place a golfball on top of a tee in my side yard, and drive a ball to Dorothy Hamm.
*My house is less than 400 meters from Dorothy Hamm. The current world record for the 400m dash is 43 seconds. America’s best and brightest can sprint from my house to Dorothy Hamm in well under a minute.
I think that common-sense needs to prevail over technocratic lunacy. If you can hit a ball to a school, then your kids should go to school there.
And all joking aside, I implore you to reconsider this complete non-sense. The proposed change represents a significant burden to my family and would be glaringly inefficient. There has to be a smarter way to do this than exiling families within a quarter mile. I agree with the goal. Please tweak this so that it isn’t so ridiculous for those of us that are in super close proximity to the school.

APS: Stop making constant changes to decisions you JUST made. Our town needs more stability in its school boundaries. The constant upheaval is bad for kids, families, teachers, schools—everyone!!

We live .5 mile from Hamm. Makes no sense to bus 2.5 miles to WMS. Keep Taylor ES 100% to DHMS.

The kids walking by my house to school in the morning are my alarm clock and my reminder in the afternoon to walk the dog. It has made a positive difference in the neighborhood to have a walkable school.

In this time of promoting green initiatives to mitigate climate change, I strongly object to this initiative to have neighborhood kids either bus or be driven by car to school. Walking to school should be the goal not polluting our environment.

Please consider our community's strong opposition to this proposal. Children who walk to school have been found to have higher academic performance. The ability to walk to school, particularly when they are three blocks away, fosters a sense of independence and daily accomplishment further building confidence. Forcing a decision without allowing for true community dialogue and support is not the Arlington way and extremely disappointing.

Strongly support keeping walkers going to Hamm. Homeowners also specifically purchased property because they thought it was important for their kids to walk to school and rushing through a process that unexpectedly and illogically changes those rules they relied on in making the most important financial decision of their lives without due consideration for those most impacted is horrible local politics.
