I don’t post about politics often, but this is a very unique situation. I also feel very driven to get it out to people who live in Washington. There has been an Amphitheater proposed out on the highway. Having worked in a concert venue I feel there are facts that people need to be aware of.
I attended the open house that the city council hosted several weeks ago. What I found was quite disturbing. One poster titled “sound intrusion study” showed a radius around the outdoor venue. I asked the person standing by it how many Hertz this is showing. (Correction the term for volume is Decibels) She said it didn’t have anything to do with that. So the poster wasn't showing anything besides a google map measurement of distance. Which doesn’t show you anything about sound. This was extremely misleading and lots of people misunderstood and moved on without it being explained to them. They also have plans for a pond to stop the sound. I have no idea who proposed that. Sound bounces off of water like crazy. So this would actually increase the volume to the surrounding neighborhoods. I know sound seems to be the number 1 issue for most people but it isn’t even close to the money.
They also had a poster showing how we will make upwards of $900,000 in the very first year with only 9 concerts (and only being open 4 or 5 months out of the year). I asked the girl standing by that poster, does this factor in alcohol sales? She said yes, when asked to explain. She couldn’t.
Local politics comes down to literally a few hundred votes. So if they can get a few dozen people to walk away thinking it’s not a big deal they probably can pass the vote without any resistance. One of the aldermen said to me, at the open house, that he was worried about the project until he found out EVERYTHING was paid for. After I gave him a look, he corrected himself and said well $12 million. And I of course brought up the $6 million that the taxpayers will be paying.
