We, the undersigned, feel that it is in the best interest of the United States Judo Association and to the entire judo community to promote Dr. James Tanaka to the rank of Hachidan (8th degree black belt). His lifelong dedication to judo, both as a practitioner and an educator, has greatly influenced the lives of those who have had the opportunity to learn from him. In essence, to say that with the dedication he poured into judo, it would be a great disservice to all past, current, and future judokas, if the USJA Board of Directors, after reviewing his application, deny us, his friends, family, and most importantly his students, from seeing him achieve this great honor.

I was looking at the screen and just realized how far this has traveled since I first hit post (it feels like forever ago) and honestly my head is spinning a bit because seeing this kind of support for Dr. Tanaka is just really something else. It makes me wonder if we really are finally going to see him get that recognition he earned decades ago because the momentum right now is honestly kind of surreal.

Dr. Tanaka came into my life at a critical time, alone in an intimidating world with a newborn daughter. Rarely does a day pass that I don’t think about him, the lessons he so humbly shared with me, the many insights into the real world, the power of calmness, tranquility, the nature of being human, how a 5’ girl can avoid a 6’5” specimen of testosterone-soaked muscle until it becomes necessary to guide him into the air and onto his head. Most of all, he taught me the most valuable lesson, a lesson I carry with me into the world each day, the embodiment of judo - TO GIVE WAY.

Sensei Tanaka helped me get my confidence back when I was a teenager. He is the real deal and this rank is way overdue.

THE BEST. He has taught so many people so much about respect and discipline. Long overdue for an 8th dan.
