I would like to engage in this discussion and ask some questions. The only reason I voted yes for the referendum was so these kids could expand their sports program, so I would like more information about why this is not happening. I'm hoping my insights don't negatively affect the decisions made in the future.
1. I acknowledge that the field house was a random idea thrown in with absolutely no promise behind it. But why mention it if there were no intentions of involving the gymnastics space there? Same thing goes with the mention of moving to the high school gym. When did the board deny the 6 court facility and approve the 4 court facility? Did the 6 court facility get denied and then the rest of the community was informed of the deny and told with that "because the six court facility was denied the gymnastics team will not have the opportunity to move to the high school."? To my knowledge, there was no information of that team moving if, and only if, the original proposal was accepted. But who knows, even with the 6 court approval they would still probably be the team to get the short end of the stick. Why get their hopes up if there truly was no intention to move them?
2. I would slightly disagree that the equipment is well managed and taken care of, I've been in there. However, mat replacement is not what this discussion is about. The football, baseball, and softball athletes that help move the equipment into storage. Do they help set up for the summer program? Will they help tear down at the end of the summer program? Will they then also help set up AGAIN for the competition season? If not, why is this process being pushed onto these athletes and their parents, who clearly did not choose for the fall program to be taken away from them? I thought part of the point of the dedicated space was so that NO team had to set up and tear down the gym. But now the gym has to be torn down MULTIPLE times in the year.

I appreciate the passion and engagement on this topic. I need to address a few items in the statement above.
1. The original plan did not include a separate field house for gymnastics. Discussion included moving gymnastics to the blue gym with the possibility of providing a year round facility. The discussion to move gymnastics to PLHS took place during the planning phase for possible 6-court facility being added to PLHS. The levy that included the 6-court facility failed. The levy that passed included a 4-court facility with very limited seating. The promise made was to move as many programs to the PLHS as possible. In the end the design team decided to bring dance and cheer to PLHS and leave gymnatics at TOMS.
2. Safety is always are number one concern. In the past 3 years, we have replaced the spring floor, purchased a new carpet, new balance beam and are in planning for a new vault. The equipment is well managed and taken care. We are quick to replace what needs replacing. Along with gymnasts and their parents, our custodians help move the equipment. Our football, baseball and softball athletes also help move the equipment into storage.
3. This is not a 9th grade boys basketball vs Gymnastics issue. In the Winter, we have 9 levels of basketball (108 athletes) and an intramural program (220 athletes) sharing gym space. We will be bringing over 5 levels dance and 3 levels of cheer from TOMS when the new facility is built. This decision to bring over Cheer and Dance was based on both practice space and competition space. It was not an easy decision. In the end the design committee felt it was in the best interest of all programs to keep Gymnastics at TOMS.
4, Gymnastics has always used the Blue gym at TOMS from Nov-March for their competitive season. This will not change. We have always taken down equipment in spring so baseball & softball had a facility to practice in. This has helped provide additional PE space during the sch

I was a gymnast for 10 years, I know how much these girls deserve this and how hard you have to work each and every day to get to the point in gymnastics where you’re at the top of the podium

I am totally for this petition. I have a 11yr old child in gymnastics my self and agree gynastics doesnt not get enough credit as is! These girls and boys work just as hard if not harder for this sport, and commit thier lives to it! I am saddened to hear a school of education would try to lessen strenghth of such a great sport that teaches much more then just jumping around on mats n swiinging on bars. I have seen it, builds strength, confidence, elegance, endurence, friendships n soo much more! Good luck to all u gymnasts n familys n i hope u get what ur hoping for! Keep pushing, dont let um get u down!!

Gymnastics is a beautiful sport that everyone enjoys. PL gymnasts are already forced to work out at the middle schools and deserve to continue to work out.

My grand daughter has worked at this sport for years and sacrificed time with her father so she could be part of this team. A referendum was passed with plans to give these girls the space they need to practice their sport. I would like to know the ration of girl to boy sports and if the girls in this school are given equal opportunities to participate in sports. It is similar to the hockey versus figure skating ice time and budgets. Gymnastics is not a sport where you can stop and start and keep your competitive edge. Please reconsider the decision to shortchange this program.

Gymnastics is just as important as any other sport. They work hard and put in long hours. To not allow them space and a full season is saying they are not worthy. To allow a junior sport over a high school team sport is wrong
