Allow John H. Guyer Students to exercise first amendment rights in support of reforming gun laws

To Dr. Shaun Perry, Mia Price, Dorothy Martinez, Dr. Jeanetta Smith, Dr. Jim Alexander, Doug Chadwick, Barbara Burns, and Charles Stafford:
On February 14th, 2018, seventeen people lost their lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. On April 20th, 2018, the nineteenth anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting, students from thousands of schools all across America are staging walkouts to protest our government's failure to pass laws to prevent these types of shootings from happening again. John H. Guyer High School students will be participating in this nonviolent act of protest. We would like to work with the administration to ensure this demonstration goes smoothly.
We would like to ask Dr. Perry and the Board of Trustees to refrain from issuing any sort of punishment in relation to the peaceful use of our first amendment rights.
UPDATE: An event is happening on April 20th that will include demonstration, voter registration, and speeches. We have the support of Dr. Perry, and we are working with the administration to ensure the safety of all participants.

You’d seriously be restricting the freedom of these kids by not allowing the peaceful walkout in protest to something that STRICTLY concerns them as students
Peaceful protest is a longstanding American tradition in line with 1st Amendment rights. One day standing with kids across the country to speak out against the violence brought upon them adds to their education of taking part in their community.
Dr. Perry and the Board of Trustees should offer a place to go or an exception to the truancy. Or working with the city and rec centers so the kids will be safe while they exercise their rights. Something! Their job is to protect students, help them stay safe while they protest for their safety.
Students applying to universities won't be downgraded for getting in trouble for peaceful protests. Makes the K-12 educational system look petty when they levy consequences for civic action. Denton ISD should support these students.
As parent of Guyer student and taxpayer in Denton ISD for almost 30 years, it is abhorrent that you would punish these kids for exercising their rights. I hope this gets the media attention that it deserves and you are shamed for not being as progressive as Southlake and McKinney schools. DO BETTER GUYER.
The walkout is important for all of us students, parents, and teachers and yes while there will be some people at my school and others who are only signing this as a free 3 day weekend but the wide majority of us want our voices heard and what to feel safe in or schools. If we can not then you as an adult and lawmaker have failed in protecting the students of your very schools.
These students embody our wishes for all Americans to be involved in the democratic process. Their actions should be encouraged rather than punished.

As a former curriculum coordinator for Denton ISD, I strongly urge you to allow DISD students to join people across the country in asking legislators to make our schools safer by passing sensible gun restrictions.
