I honestly cannot believe they decided to keep the funding in place because I was so sure we were heading for a complete disaster. It is kind of wild that our noise actually forced them to look at the theater differently but now we just have to keep eyes on …

To Continue the City of Miami’s Fiscal Support of the Historic
Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts

To:        The Honorable Tomas Regalado and City of Miami Commissioners

From:    Concerned Miami Residents

Whereas, The Gusman Center was built in 1926, and was home to many artists and cultural icons from Etta James, and Elvis Presley to Luciano Pavarotti;

Whereas, the Gusman Center was donated to the City of Miami in 1975; and

Whereas, the Gusman Center is one of the few remaining historic icons in our community and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places as of 1984; and

Whereas, the Gusman Center supports our local artists and arts community and is host to many cultural and artistic events; and

Whereas, the Gusman’s downtown location is essential to the support and revitalization of downtown Miami; and

Whereas, the City’s continued financial support is vital and instrumental in allowing the Gusman Center to provide a venue for our cultural community by supporting operations for the Theater.

We, the undersigned hereby urge and request that the City of Miami continue its fiscal support of the historic Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts.

I was just walking past the theater today thinking about how much of our city history is painted on those old walls and it is wild that we even have to fight to keep the lights on. I have been spending my nights sending emails into the void but I swear I am actually getting through to a few people who might listen if we keep this momentum going. Honestly it is a bit overwhelming but the stories you are all leaving in the comments about your first concerts are keeping me fueled.

This place is a jewel. We cannot let our history just crumble away because of some budget cuts. Please keep it open.

What a shame if they defund this. Downtown is finally turning around and this theater is a huge part of why.

Miami needs culture not just more high rise condos everywhere. The Olympia is irreplaceable.

Keep the funding. This is the only historic venue worth anything in this zip code.
