I agree in our fundamental right to bear arms both for protection and hunting but for it to be regulated responsibly in a manner that allows for safety to always be paramount in ensuring weapons do not end up in the wrong hands.
Proper waiting periods and safety requirements/screenings should be without a doubt a requirement.

Signed because I agree in principle and your preamble is really well-written. For argument's sake (and cos I miss school)... if we tighten the regulations against gun owners and dealerships, whats stops the federal government for tightening its grip on other amendments from the bill of rights? For example, the iPhone unlocking case in recent memory as a test of our right to privacy under the Fourth Amendment. Naturally, its the citizens (Apple and its customers) against the government (the judicial branch who ordered action).
It may seem like these laws are mutually exclusive, but remember that giving the government more power to control what people can do by making judgments that curb the basic, "unalienable" rights supported by its citizens at the nation's inception will cause a strong backlash for this reason. In a way, its not even people being scared the government will "take err guns" as much as its the fear of persistently overreaching laws and their enforcement. I mean, you got clerks in TX still refusing to write marriage licenses for gay spouses. Any decision made to alter gun laws will encounter a response twenty times as defiant. Civil war-like. This is why nothing ever happens to them. And because the NRA is the richest, most powerful lobby in Washington DC, keeping politicans' coffers full.
We can only hope the way these amendments are changed is in a very specific manner worded to ensure the protection of citizens, not the oppression of them.

I agree!! More strict Gun laws need to be enforced. More background checks etc... This Petition has influenced me to do more research on gun control.
