"Guard the Guardians" at Manatee County Animal Services

It's years past time to clean house at MCAS! Most of the people there should be ashamed of themselves. But they aren't. . .what does that tell you about them??!! they should not be working there!

We need to get rid of these people the animal's deserve better.

I'm sorry you had to endure such grief. One of the shelter's major problems is that it never enacted a proactive redemption program to reunite pet owners with their pets. Chip-scanning was to have been a part of that. All the animal control service vehicles were even equipped with chip scanners, but the scanners sometimes go unused. This is one of many examples of the waste, fraud, and abuse that is behind the county's 2011 NO KILL resolution.

Absolutely. The citizens who acquired the video through public records request exercised considerable restraint by not publishing the entire video feed. In the still shot they published prior to the one posted here, the same animal is seen sniffing the other dead animals. Before that it was witnessing the death of the other animals. You can imagine, given your sharp observation of the defensive position it's in in this shot, what a struggle it was to get that poor animal onto the table. The other sad part is that this dog was healthy and adoptable. It was labeled a behavioral problem despite weeks earlier having been advertised as adoptable and walked by a group of cheerleaders from local high school.

Precisely. The county's spay-neuter program is pretty much non-existent. It does not take into account that the people who need such a program are the county's under-served citizens. The commissioner who called the under-served "losers" is an example of how hostile the county is to this demographic, in general. In Commissioner Whitmore's case, the comments are particularly incredulous because she gains a lot of sympathy from voters because she claims to have been a "homeless" teenager. She is regarded as a "local poor girl made good" but she seems to have forgotten her roots.

Right on. The BoCC hires and fires the County Administrator, Ed Hunzeker, who is supposed to work for them--not the other way around. He was fired from his previous county admin job in Osceola County precisely because the commissioners there found he was not answerable to them. He ruled that county like a czar and now he is doing the same thing in Manatee County.

Well, to answer your question, the animal abuse in the shelter has gone on so long because Manatee County has a deeply entrenched, corrupt political system that is unable, in the case of one truly honorable commissioner, Robin DiSabatino, and unwilling, in the case of her truly dishonorable six counterparts on the dais, to hold the county administrator accountable for the supervision of his employees. The sad part is that the lack of accountability and transparency at the shelter is systemic to the entire administration of most departments in county government.

So wrong!

This has to stop! Why has it gone on so long?

They all need to be replaced with someone that has a heart and loves or even likes animals. They all need jail time for the pain they have influenced on these defenceless animals

This has to stop.Maybe new people with compassion for the animals should should be hired.

MCAS needs a total overhaul. Enough of the lies, of the poor care and treatment of its unfortunate "residents," and of the coverups. Let's wipe the slate clean and get this agency into humane and honest hands.
