Many teachers at Georgia State University (and I'm sure other universities across the US) have class grading scales that allow a student to get an A- but not an A+. Grading scales such as these discourage the average A students from achieving their best grade because there is no reward in achieving more than an A. These kinds of grading scales also punish students for achieving less than an A (by bringing down their GPA) but they do not reward students for achieving more than an A. This type of grading is also very harmful to students who are relying on their outstanding academic performance to give them the edge they need to stand out of a crowd in situations such as job applications, scholarship applications, study abroad trips, law and medical school applications, and more.
