Conversion of Green Room to a common room space This Union Notes 1. That the Union building has a room known as ‘The Green Room’, often now referred to as ‘The Gallery’ 2. That this is a large open-plan space that has formerly been used as a café space for students to socialise and eat This Union Believes 1. That the lack of food and non-alcohol-based social space available in the Union building limits the ability of students to avail of the Union building and fails to facilitate greater membership involvement in the activities and functioning of the Union as a whole. 2. Student space is a necessary part of a University life yet both the College and this Union building currently offers limited facilities for this 3. The Union is often relatively empty and many students never make use of the facilities, preferring instead to meet, socialise, eat and drink hot drinks in College café facilities This Union Resolves 1. To affirm the status of The Green Room as a gallery and exhibition space while asserting its purpose as a Common Room, for use by the whole membership as a casual social space with areas designated for informal meetings of Students’ Union societies, clubs and other organisations. 2. To affirm this through designating the space ‘The Green Room and Gallery’ 3. To put out to tender the provision of food, with caterers using the existing facilities and offering a range of healthy food (i.e. non-fast food) with a high percentage of halal, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options (at least 50%) 4. To strive to push the new caterers to set rates undercutting those set by catering facilities run by the University. 5. Whilst the provision of food services may be out-sourced, the design and layout of the actual room should remain in the hands of the membership, through the decision making processes of the constitution and in line with students’ demands 6. To hold a public consultation with the membership regarding the aesthetic design and layout of the space, led by a working group formed of four members of the Student Assembly but would be OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS 7. To support elected student officers with a project designated ‘Re-Vitalising the Green Room’ with initial funds of £800 to decorate in line with the wishes of students as indicated through the public consultation 8. To take whatever steps necessary to involve the membership in the decision making process relating to the changes to the space and to endeavour to push for long opening hours and an inclusive atmosphere 9. For the resolves of this motion to be enacted ready for the beginning of the Spring term commencing January 2009
