Gratuity is never expected but always appreciated

To our Team,
This is a formal call for action from the Server & Bartender team at Jack’s Front Street. We feel left in the dark when it comes to the recent changes with our debit & credit gratuity options.
Tipping in Canada is a tricky situation. Many guests find using our terminals difficult, confusing and at times uncomfortable having to be guided through the gratuity process. In 10 days we’ve had .20 cent tips that needed to be questioned and adjusted, $18 tips instead of 18%. Uncomfortable, avoidable situations.
Very concerned about staffing for the summer in general when many senior staff feel as if they need to start, or have started, to look for work elsewhere. Jack’s culture is being affected with management and shift leaders bombarded with questions daily since the change.
We are located in a very busy tourist area, and some guests are not aware of Canadian tipping customs. Having gratuity suggestions (along with exact dollar amounts shown) aids in their awareness.
With other establishments suggesting 18%, 20% & 22%, we were fine with our 15/18/20. We work hard at one of the biggest & busiest restaurants in Toronto. We are aware of inflation and menu increased pricing, but feel as if we are either being punished or under appreciated when our income is being unfavourably affected. Having the 15,18 & 20% made it easier, faster (time management is important) and helpful for the guests.
We don’t believe this request is unreasonable. We are not paid an hourly wage that can accommodate living in Toronto, so gratuity is a necessity to avoid poverty. Our Front of house, back of house & bartenders are provided percentage based tip outs. We only ask that this process be made less difficult and uncomfortable for your guests & peeps.
