In the OUSD, there is a rather unfair policy that the board of directors have created that only certain selection of students are able to walk the stage due to a vast array of qualifications for them complete, i.e a certain amount of credits to pass, passing a senior project and etc. In the different high schools that there are several students that were just inches away from the graduation ceremony but were just shy a few credits. Even if there were clear validated reasons or not, the students were completely denied of walking the stage, even after purchasing an already pricey cap and gown. It stigmatizes those who aren't fast learners, or those who don't do well in a classroom environment. Each person has a unique learning style and speed, and if takes just a little longer to get your diploma, then that is alright, there shouldn't be a consequence for learning. Every child and family should deserve that moment on that stage, even if they didn't meet the "qualifications". Students have already endured a gruesome four years of tiring education, and only to not be able to be with their classmates for a brief fifteen seconds of their lives is a crime. It isn't like the students who didn't pass are going to just leave, they are going to have to make up those credits in the summer anyways, and it isn't like you get your diploma on stage anyways, because it just comes in the mail in a rather undignified way instead of actually being handed it on stage.I petition that the graduation ceremony policy be abolished and that all students in the OUSD be allowed to walk the stage no matter what circumstances they are under.
