I had a full course load but still took a considerable amount of time studying for this class. I had done all the readings and came to all classes. When there was group work and homework, I flew through those and got all A's and B's on them, but then the exams were 10x harder and not to mention not very reflective on the material taught in class.

I apologize in advance to the lengthy post.
I was anticipating this class before the semester had begun. I have always enjoyed various science courses, but I have never struggled with a course as much as this one, which is quite unfortunate. I spent many hours studying on top of the many preceptor and SI sessions that I had gone to a regular basis. Not to mention it is even more difficult when students have to balance full-time course loads and working. I got to know many other students who felt defeated after completing their exams because they felt as if they deserved better with all of the time and effort spent trying to achieve a passing grade. I understood that this class was going to be difficult and time consuming, but I felt completely dumbfounded after numerous attempts to get an A on the exam, despite all of my effort. The course material is very interesting and I believe Dr. Prosser and Dr. Merk know the material very well and gave great notes most of the time, but I felt as the material on the exam, especially the free response was not an accurate representation/demonstration of our knowledge in the course. I also wanted to mention that I believe the TopHat questions could have been handled very differently. If they wanted to test us on knowledge I felt like it should have been towards the end of class, or even the beginning of the next class to ensure that we understood the material, and were caught up on our notes. I will most likely end up having to retake this course with another instructor because that is how confident I feel I did overall.

I eventually began to stop coming to the class because my grades were so bad and just decided to retake the class. It’s not because I didn’t study because I do well on the homework, but sometimes the two professors are on different pages. There’s no reason that if I have questions, I must email the professor that taught that specific lecture. If the class has two professors, they need to work collaboratively. The both of them should have explanations. I don’t understand why they felt the need to have two professors for one science class anyway if they were going to do their own things. Their level of difficulties are different from each other. The whole class honestly just needs to be trashed.

I agree completely with the statement made on this petition. I do not feel like the tests were written fairly in a way that reflected information taught in class. I feel like I know the material but don't feel like i was given the chance to score what i should have

Exams did NOT reflect what was taught in class at at all. Far greater detail was expected on exams than anything taught in class, SI sessions, or the book. Preceptor were even more harsh Professor were more depend on them.
Also professor was not helping at all if i were to ask him question after or before class. Group was so hard!
i studied for this class more then 16hr week still not passing exam?

Class was not structured well. Collaboration between professors was not accurate or clear. They would tell us different things to focus on. Exam averages were extremely low and nothing was done to help fix this. Class was ridiculous

I also agree with what was stated. Each exam, I felt was not extremely fair. I attend preceptor sessions every week. I study extremely hard, but then I get to the exam and I feel as though my studying was useless. It is an all or nothing exam. It’s either you get the point or you don’t. Since there is also two professors, both have extremely different approaches to grading. As one is much harsher than the other, the grading is not fair. As one student is able to get more points on one problem than another, even if they wrote the same, just because two different professors can grade the exam and judge it.

My problem lies solely with the testing material of this class. Concepts are graspable, and I did enjoy the class/information given, but isn't it a red flag when the class average is in the 60's every single test? It seems that tests were just leveled up to a point where the material was taken further than what was presented in class or in the textbook.

Group works were graded unfairly and on a very binary basis. Also participation grading was done very confusingly. Hw was difficult and much more lengthy than lead on to believe. Dr. Prosser was good at teaching the material but his grading methods need to be fine tuned so that everybody has a fair shot at understanding the material and excelling in the class.

I think that there should be SOME type of grade leniency. Especially given that this is the first time these professors have taught the course. For example, the lowest MasteringGenetics homework grade could be dropped. Thanks for giving consideration to this matter.

I fully agree with all that is stated here. I am in a similar situation, being a full time student and full time worker, so the extra credit sessions were not accessible to me. I studied very hard for this class and did excellent on homework and groupwork, but the tests are weighted so heavy and were unfair in content. The class should have a curve.
