So you are all going to Chiang Mai, and you are all going to be visiting two elephant centers. One is the Elephant Nature Park. The Elephant Nature Park is a rescue center for elephants rescued from performing shows, from living on the streets and from the harsh conditions of being part of animal entertainment.
The other place that we will be visiting a performing elephant show. Just the very type of the Elephant Nature Park is discouraging tourists to go to. It is also the very place that UWCSEA students as ethical tourists should NOT go to.
By going to this performing elephant show we are supporting the cruelty that the mahouts (the trainers of the elephants) inflict upon the elephants. The mahouts train the elephants to do ‘tricks’ by firstly breaking their spirit. The phajaan (the method of ‘training’) begins with the separation of young elephants from their mothers and they are then subjected to torture and torment until their spirit is broken. The ‘reason’ that we go to this performing elephant center is to ‘show us what it’s like’.
