A roundabout was installed near Penicuik in 2004. Since it was installed there have been several accidents on this road, some drivers have been killed and some have even driven round the wrong way. I was involved in a head on collision on 6 August 2007 and was travelling with my 2 ½ year old son in the back of my car. A driver came round the corner and hit the bend at 70 mph, lost control of his car and came screaming over the other side of the road and hit my car head on. My car was written off and thankfully we both had a few bumps and bruises. In 2007 due to the amount of accidents since the roundabout was built, Penicuik and District Community Council put pressure on Midlothian Council transport officials to carry out a survey of all the accidents in the area of the Roundabout since 2004 and if there was any plans to change the road layout and signage. They also voiced concern at the number of near misses and accidents on the A701 roundabout due to motorists travelling round it in the wrong direction. Bus lanes are now at the side of the road and traffic lights at the road past the slip road for Auchendinny. This clearly has made no difference. The latest accident was on Friday 19th August and a young soldier lost his life. It is time to take action and get something done about this roundabout. STV news covered this story and referred to this roundabout as an “accident black-spot”. I am hoping to get all your help to send a loud and clear message to Midlothian Council and even as far as the Scottish Parliament to find out a) the results of the survey carried out and b) if there are any plans to change this to avoid more casualties and fatalities. I am aiming for at least 5000 signatures and have also set up an email address too for those of you who wish to help. Please sign this petition and help to make our roads safer.
